Brown floating lights throughout this gorge have been witnessed by many and recently captured by Appalachian State University. Found on YouTube, their videos have given new life to the local folklore surrounding these mysterious floating lights and a surge of spectators lingering at vistas past dark.
By word of mouth on the trails, I've gathered that most believe them to be spirits of tortured Native Americans. In US history, the natives were exiled and subjects of mass genocide by the settlers.
Linville Gorge has been said to be the last stronghold natives held before they were forced into reservations. It was also said that the gorge itself was named after the last white man to be scalped by Native Americans.
A number of people claim this wilderness area possess strong spiritual forces, attributed to the volatile events that took place here.
The scientific theory attributes the lights to pockets of gas, rising from the valley bed, refracting light.
