Father’s Day in Tennessee. Overwhelmed with gratitude and love. It has been bittersweet having my parents move to TN. So, so happy for them, they are enjoying each other, family, and beautiful country up here...but I’ve been missing them. It’s so good to get to spend some time with them and my brother, his other half, and my niece. Juno is in heaven hanging with her bud. One of the many highlights of this trip was cooking dinner for the family on father’s day and delivering it via 4 wheeler with me being towed by my dad, with Juno running along side. Missing Suzi incredibly, cannot wait to get her up here. Another one of the four units has been converted to Airbnb. Search “nutty goat farm” in Sevierville, TN, if interested. Just outside of Gatlinburg. My parents would love to host you. :)

“I see people put their faces up to these things all the time. I don’t see what the big deal is?” Saturday, I made it to the top of Clingmans Dome around 3 am. Just like the last time I was there for night shots, it was cold. My watch said 46 degrees, but it felt colder than that. A 20+ mph wind was going, too. I timed it so that I got to Cataloochee Valley just in time for sunrise. I was rewarded by a nice sunrise in the valley, plus a good amount of time with several elk with a calf. I hadn’t gotten to see the spotted little ones before, so that was quite a treat. But after the light was off the clouds, things got interesting. The elk (all cows) decided to come and check out the old barn next to me. That was nice. I even got some shots of them interacting with the old structure that I’m looking forward to processing. The elk then start licking one particular spot in the gravel parking area around halfway between me and the barn. Also made for some interesting shots. I figure someone had dumped a coke out of their car before leaving last night. Now, as the elk had left the field, I moved my landscape rig to right by the car figuring that was safe. As they moved forward in the gravel I kept my wildlife rig with me, but left the wide angle where it was. Then two of the cows started nosing and licking the wide angle rig and then started bumping it. I was really glad it was steady tripod. After everything calmed down and they had all moved on I went over to see how the landscape rig was. There was a mixture of gravel and elk spittle all over my circular polarizer and my nd grad. Fortunately, it all came clean with no scratches. :) #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #nature_good #nature_brilliance #nature_perfection #nature_shooters #naturelover #nature_lovers #nature_seekers #wild #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlife_shots #wildlife_photography #smokymountains #gsmnp #cataloocheevalley #gearshots #canon #mycanonstory #animals #animalovers #leefilters #phototrip #mountains

The Mountains are Calling.... Tunes & Tales welcomes newcomer, Nina Ricci! To those who follow folk music, Nina Ricci has been said to be "reminiscent of a young Joan Baez,” and "one of the great voices in folk music today.” John Paul White of the Civil Wars noted similarity to the doll of country music, Dolly Parton. Her characteristic vibrant long tones sustained by a hypnotic vibrato are the features of the voice of a young woman who has studied her craft. Nina always felt that she wanted to emerge out of the folk music world, for she believes in the value of having roots. While not solely a “traditional” singer, Nina interprets folk songs from the patchwork of the Americana quilt, giving a new voice to songs that have a seemingly never-ending life. In 2018, Nina released her debut album Designs On Me, containing 7 distinctive original songs. Nina’s own music is very personal, although not an autobiographical writer, her experiences and perspectives are made known through her storytelling. While her earlier work had a broad and impetuous feeling, Nina’s vision has matured over time and gained more understanding. Her lyricism has a poetic quality, yet has a way of coming across the table to meet audiences head-on. It’s clear in her on-stage presentation that Nina requires her audience to do more than sit back and listen, but to come with the preparation of an educated ear. She balances her songs on the neck of her polished rosewood Taylor, which she plays folk finger-style, using ProPik and aLaska fingerpicks. Having spread her wings with a new fully produced, full-band album, Nina is returning to her mainstay as a solo folksinger and songwriter this year as she continues to grow as an artist. The Mountains are Calling.... Boogertown Gap Old-Time String Band is a wife and husband duo: Ruth Barber and Keith Watson whose ancestors were the first permanent settlers in what is now Gatlinburg. They share a love of the Great Smoky Mountains and the music of their ancestors and the early settlers that lived here. They were one of the very first cast members of Gatlinburg’s Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales when it began in 2006. Their musical performance includes stories and history of the music, ballads, fiddle tunes, dance tunes and spirituals performed in traditional style and on traditional instruments, the way it would have been heard in these mountains 150 years ago, except that the musical spoons are played with a modern twist. They use fiddle, guitar, banjo (clawhammer style), pennywhistle, spoons and Native American flute. Tunes & Tales June 21-Aug 3, 6-11 pm nightly. #tunesandtales2019 #gatlinburg #gatlinburgtennessee #free #music #artisans #cloggers #storytelling #familyoriented #smokymountainsnationalpark #smokymountains #smokies #tennessee #tourism

⛰ The Smoky Mountains were given their name by the Cherokee because it actually looks like certain areas are covered in a blue haze. This hike to Chimney Tops was an absolutely glorious adventure that included an insane incline and hundreds of stairs; I was a bit out of breath upon reaching the top and even had to take a few breaks on my way up there, perhaps due to my former habit of smoking. Though the final bit of the trail was closed after a wildfire destroyed it several years ago, I had the lookout all to myself and it was even more breathtaking than the hike. My recovering lungs have triumphed yet again, this time conquering the Smokies themselves. 🙌🏼🖤
