Lots 28 & 30 by Octavianus Monfort (1646-1696).
The collection of Mrs. John Gutfreund March 23, 11am
Italian painter, Octavianus Monfort is known as a painter of still lifes on parchment, though he also is documented as having studied and profited from miniature painting during his career. Monfort most notably received payment for his art from Christine of France, the Duchess of Savoy, while he was working in Turin, Italy.
Monfort’s only dated works are from the 1680s, so it is known that he was active during the second half of the 17th century. It has also been established that Monfort was strongly influenced by fellow still life painter, Giovanna Garzoni, who was actively employed in Turin by the Savoy court from 1632-1637.
Lots 28 and 30 are both examples of Monfort’s refined still life painting, and are painted in tempera on vellum.
