Did your last furniture hunt in the city leave you disheartened? Perhaps you had to hop trams and buses to get from A -Z to visit your favourite stores, only to find they didn’t have quite what you were looking for? City renovating can be stressful, particularly when you’re zipping around on public transport. Planning out your day is essential if you want to make the most of your design dollars and time. Many furniture retailers are conveniently bundled together in Home Centres, but often these stores are not exactly what we’re looking for! How much time do you dedicate to browsing online before you jump on the bus to visit your favourite store? Have you ever thought to yourself...’there must be an easier way?’ I know its out there somewhere, but where? Next time consider pre-shopping your design by loading a brief into www.homehustle.com.au and let local retailers hustle for your design dollars. If you like what you see, jump on a bus and go and check it out for yourself.

Often referred to as the prototype for Sirius, The Laurels at Sans Souci adopted a modular construction where the arrangement of each module allowed different configurations of one, two and three-bedroom units. The structure is load bearing brickwork with concrete slabs. The various arrangement of split-level units provides each with a terrace of courtyard. The site was acquired by the Housing Commission of NSW in an attempt to integrate social housing into existing communities, instead of developing large Greenfield sites on the outskirts of Sydney and creating large areas with only Housing Commission tenants. The Housing Commission designed and developed the scheme. Like Sirius, construction documentation was undertaken by Alexander and Lloyd Architects. - #saveoursirius #sirius #sossirius #greenban #heritage #architecture #australianarchitecture #sydneyarchitecture #sydney #brutalism #australianbrutalism #sydneybrutalism #housing #sydney #affordablehousing

Something we are super excited about watching unfold during our build, is the epic windows. Aiming for that modern minimal Brunswick warehouse vibe, we have gone with large commercial windows in several locations to compliment the recycled brick. They will reflect the stunning greenery surrounding us and bring the green + light in. The living area features one 5.2 m long 🙌🏻 Picture Pinterest. More visuals on stories x

So this sounds terribly superficial to write about 🤭 but when Hugo was first born and we were told he was profoundly disabled with a very poor long term prognosis, one of the first thoughts I had was how I really didn’t want to have all the ‘disability’ equipment in my house. I have always been very house proud and how my space looks and feels is super important to me. The thought of wheelchairs, ugly bathrooms with grab bars, equipment everywhere, hoists and more was just too much to imagine. That sounds crazy doesn’t it??! 😬 But believe it or not that was seriously something I thought about even despite all the other hideous news we were presented with in the early months. Anyway over the last 8 years I’ve obviously had to come to terms with the equipment issues ☺️ And as many who have followed along for a while will know, I’m getting very good at designing disabled friendly bathrooms and spaces that don’t look like they were necessarily designed for someone with special needs. BUT….some equipment does have to go on show and can’t be hidden away, like Hugos’e new bed that arrived just before Christmas. This is a huge cot type thing with hospital bed like function and is an AMAZING piece of equipment for Hugo. Plus it is saving our backs lifting Hugo to bed and for nappy changes and things we need to help him with. So the function is great. But what about the design? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not so great (although could be worse I guess). But I decided to just run with it and create a fun, colourful room around the huge cot like bed. There’s no hiding it so I decided to work with it instead. I think his room looks friendly and inviting and I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out in the end. My message to you from all of this….don’t worry if you’ve got ugly things in your house that you have to live with (think old kitchens/bathrooms or ugly poles or beams in the middle of rooms) - work with them, not against them and you’ll still be able to create lovely spaces. Also - if you’re interested swipe to see how his bed closes up at night to keep him safe. 🥰
