It's the middle of the summer, which means I am missing teaching. So, to celebrate their amazing achievements last term, here is the work of my Woodbury Studio 3b. Kevin Flores and Joseph Monck designed the multi-modal transit center "The San Pedro Portal" to efficiently connect many different forms of transit - pedestrian, cars, Blue Line light rail, buses, high-speed rail, and large ferries. They proceeded very authentically from the lessons learned from their chosen precedent - Amsterdam Centraal by Benthem Crouwel, and from a real-world analysis of their structural system, diagrid frames at various scales. They employed an intensive modeling process to mock up and prototype their ideas throughout the semester, which led to a very interesting, well thought-through final project. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE. There is an excess of empty cargo containers in the US - it is more expensive to send them back empty than to construct a new one in Asia. So Kevin and Joseph are proposing to retrofit the empties to receive solar collection, power-generation, and battery storage equipment so that energy can be harvested along the route and used to power the ships, and also to be stored and sold as start-up power generation for remote areas. The energy to be traded via this novel system is bought and sold in an energy trading floor on the top level. There is also more public space, including rooftop gardens and lower-level commuter retail. Kudos to Kevin and Joseph for their exciting ideas and hard work! As in previous years, Studio 3b at Woodbury emphasizes structural integration, so we use the ACSA/AISC Steel Competition for the brief. This year the building typology was the "Intermodal Articulation Node," or in simpler terms - a station served by multiple modes of transit. These programs After the semester, students can enter the competition if they choose. This studio was taught with my amazing colleagues @baileyshugar , @scrapmarshall and Eric Olsen.

It's the middle of the summer, which means I am missing teaching. So, to celebrate their amazing achievements last term, here is the work of my Woodbury Studio 3b. Combining repurposed and new structural elements, Hosam Fatani and Louiza Chilian's project "The Floating Anchor" is full of novel solutions. Structurally, a series of massive steel portal frames support renewable power generation, a shipping container-based market, public spaces, and a train terminal - all built atop portions of ocean freighters that have been decommissioned and would otherwise be scrapped. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE. To address the lack of land in major Asian port cities, they are proposing jet-powered commercial sea-planes, so this becomes a terminal for transferring from this exciting speculative mode of transit to a trans-continental high-speed rail system (which sadly is currently equally hypothetical). There is also more public space, including a pleasure pier with a novel amphibious ferris wheel. Kudos to Hosam and Louiza for their exciting ideas and hard work! As in previous years, Studio 3b at Woodbury emphasizes structural integration, so we use the ACSA/AISC Steel Competition for the brief. This year the building typology was the "Intermodal Articulation Node," or in simpler terms - a station served by multiple modes of transit. It's the middle of the summer, which means I am missing teaching. So, to celebrate their amazing achievements last term, here is the work of my Woodbury Studio 3b. "Terminal Village," is not just about transit, it's also about redressing a long-standing injustice. Melissa Uyuni and Ulysses Hermosillo proposed a terminal connecting intercontinental high-speed rail to long-distance ferries traveling the entire West Coast of the US, Canada, and Mexico. Even more exciting - they propose to build a new village on Terminal Island - the scene of a grave injustice in American history. At the start of World War 2, the "Japanese Fishing Village" (as it was known) there had been thriving for 40+ years. When the Japanese Internment happened, it was razed and all of the occupants sent to the internment camps. Any land they owned was stolen, the village was never rebuilt, and the people were never allowed to return. Melissa and Ulysses propose to bring back the Japanese Fishing Village as part of their multimodal transit complex, and use the anachronism between its small scale and the mega-scale of the Terminal as a narrative jumping off. You can't recreate history, nor can you ever truly erase it, so the Village lives on alongside the new Terminal, both standing in contrast - and concert - with each other. Kudos to Melissa and Ulysses for their transformative ideas and hard work! Dana Ladd and Biayna Torossian proposed a multimodal transit center in their project Blue Note. Working directly from a close reading of the context to understand a good mix of transit types, they wound up with a ferry to high-speed rail connection with vehicle and Blue Line Light Rail connections. They had an abiding interest in sustainability, so they worked to incorporate various responsible development measures in their program. The faceted space frame exterior glass skin is intended to allow for daylighting wherever available, and to allow for the growth of indoor plants. These areas were seen as being integrated directly with the public retail and hotel spaces, and thermal properties were closely watched. Kudos to Biayna and Dana for their exciting ideas and hard work! Matt Kim and Andre Paraz proposed the Mult-Modal Transit Center the Tri-Station. These two worked directly from a close reading of the context to understand a good mix of transit types to include here, settling on local and long-range ferries, regular and high-speed rail, and a terminal for Supersonic Seaplanes. Yes, you heard that right. To address the lack of land in major Asian port cities, they are proposing jet-powered commercial sea-planes, so this becomes a terminal for transferring from this exciting speculative mode of transit to a trans-continental high-speed rail system and a West Coast-spanning long range ferry system (both of which are sadly currently equally hypothetical). There is also more public space, both retail and a Museum for the Port area. These two worked very hard both to understand the context, and to make an exciting yet plausible structural proposal, and their understanding of the details shows through. Kudos to Matt and Andre for their exciting ideas and hard work! As in previous years, Studio 3b at Woodbury emphasizes structural integration, so we use the ACSA/AISC Steel Competition for the brief. This year the building typology was the "Intermodal Articulation Node," or in simpler terms - a station served by multiple modes of transit. Me #ama baixinho. * #mulheresqueescrevem #photooftheday #vintage #architectural #urbandecay #igersoftheday

It's the middle of the summer, which means I am missing teaching. So, to celebrate their amazing achievements last term, here is the work of my Woodbury Studio 3b. "EXPO 2024" is not just a transit center, it's also an exciting one-of-a-kind arts facility. Arda Kilickan and Kevin Medler proposed a terminal connecting: local and long-distance rail, Metro Blue Line, local and long-distance ferries. But the most exciting part was also the most difficult and ambitious - EXPO 2024 sits atop an existing container cargo facility - whose traffic is re-routed around the new uses - and draped over the top of the whole thing is an innovative new elevated and undulating art park for the display of mega-scaled artworks. This art park conceals the cargo operations under and behind a green curtain - made of an extensive green roof system which breaks like a wave against the cargo ships. The unique positioning of the art display space at the Port of Los Angeles also makes it possible to display art pieces that are far too large to be transported to inland locations. The whole surface uses only ADA-compliant slopes, allowing for multiple vantage points of these unique artworks for all - and the team worked hard to ensure the details of the structure were believable. Thank you to to Arda and Kevin for their ambitious ideas and hard work! As in previous years, Studio 3b at Woodbury emphasizes structural integration, so we use the ACSA/AISC Steel Competition for the brief. For many, red is the color of love. For others, it’s warmth. For some, it’s aggression. It’s passionate and demands attention. And science even now suggests that red is an important part of both male and female attraction. For all the things that red is, it seems, one thing it is not is neutral . . . #graphicdesign #design #graphics #visualcommunication #typography #layout #image #diagram #illustration #advertising #color #visual #corporateidentity #science #architecture #logo #decal #plan #architectural #scheme #product #mandala #plot #chart #pagelayout #williamaddisondwiggins #schedule #photography #illuminatedmanuscript #sketch
