AMC Trip Leader @chaoranxie2016 has posted another Blue Hills hike for this weekend. He says, “This Saturday, we will spent around 4.5 hours hiking around 6 miles of the Skyline trail, at a moderate pace, through some rugged, hilly terrain. This is great for people who have done other 5 or 6 mile previous sections of skyline trail. The elevation is similar, around 1400', but we get to explore some parts of the Blue Hills that we have not hiked before.” Trip link currently in bio, or in your recent SOS Group emails. . . . #optoutside #backpacking #trails #exploretocreate #whitemountains #summitpic #canon #hiking_pictures_of_instagram #patagonia #adventuretime #canonphotography #summit #hikingadventures #hiking #hiker #hikemassachusetts #hikestagram #amcbostonym #appalachianmountainclub #travelphotography #travelblogger

Butt sliding on the Hancocks will forever and always be one of my favorite winter activities. Big thanks to @carolinemaeh for joining in on the fun of winter in the whites! . Today we are riding out the fail that is winter storm Harper. Thanks for the fear mongering to the local meteorologists, I did need the forced rest day filled with board games, food, and hot tub mimosas. Fingers crossed the skies will clear for even a minute tonight to see the blood moon eclipse! . . . . . #womenwhohike #wwh #wwhambassador #wwhmember #grouphike #hikethewhites #52hikechallenge2019 #lonesomelake #backcountryhut #franconia #mountlafayette #frozenlake #daydream #outdoorwomen #likeamountaingirl #adventureladies #optoutside #newhampshireoutdoors #whitemountains #hikersonwmnf #hikewmnf #winterhiking #wmnf #likeamountaingirl #andshesdopetoo #allaboutadventures #getoutstayout #amcnh #appalachianmountainclub #shehikesthewhites #goeast

It was -40 degrees when I took this photo at about 7:30am this morning. I started hiking at about 5:45am in the dark with the stars shining and was the day’s trail breaker - no one had trudged up the trail yet. I was about a quarter mile into the alpine zone just breaking out of the tree line on the Crawford path when I caught this view and felt colder than I have ever been in my entire life. I quickly snapped the photo and began walking up the trail again for a couple of steps until I realized there was no trail, just 3 ft deep snow drifts hiding potentially hazardous holes to fall into. There were no cairns or markers in site to guide me, so, because I had only just left the safety of the trees, I made an almost immediate decision to head back down instead of continuing on to the summit of Mt. Pierce. It would’ve been foolish of me to continue, especially alone, and no mountain summit is worth the risk of hypothermia and potentially death from getting lost in the alpine zone. Always trust your gut. Mine was telling me to head back home, grab a nice hot coffee, and see how this photo would look when I edited it.

Grid Post: Part 1! Thanks to a very “wildly” successful “Rewild Your Health” series and the giveaway, the Rewild Appalachia community has grown significantly in the last few weeks! I got a lot of positive feedback about the whole event, so thank you to all who participated! If you missed the series, go back and look through my 7 pillars of natural health, starting with water. 🌲 Since our community has grown, this is a great opportunity to do something I’ve never really done before and answer the question: what exactly is Rewild Appalachia? 🌲 To answer that question, I think we have to first define those two words, “Rewild” and “Appalachia”, separately. . The textbook definition of rewild or rewilding is “to return to a natural, unaltered state”. The term is traditionally used in reference to land. If a piece of land has been developed, built upon, or otherwise altered by people, the process of rewilding that land would involve taking away the artificial structures or uses and allow it return to its original state naturally over time. The modern(ish) rewilding movement has taken this definition off into several different directions (some that I like, some not so much), but let’s work with just this basic description for now. 🌲 Continue reading on the next 2 posts in the grid post mini-series! . . #appalachianmountains #appalachianmountainclub #appalachiantrail #mountainfolk #mountainculture #appalachianculture #folkmusic #appalachianmusic #hiketheat #thruhike #greatsmokeymountains #danielboonenationalforest #rewild #appalachianartisans #mountainscape #mountainside #mountaintop #moonshine #moonshiners #themountainsarecalling #andimustgo #johnmuir #awalkinthewoods #optoutside 🌲

Grid Post: Part 2! This is the middle of a 3-part grid post mini-series. Check out the previous post for Part 1. 🌲 Next: Appalachia. What does Appalachia mean to you? What thoughts, memories, or emotions does the word inspire? One of the beautiful things about Appalachia is that it can mean so many different things to a number of different people. When I think of Appalachia, I first think of: 🏔Deeply rooted and distinct mountain culture. Think moonshine and folk music. 🏔Celtic ancestry 🏔Rugged mountain terrains, scenic views, and mountain folk. Think homesteaders and the Appalachian Trail. 🌲 Do any of these resonate with you? 🌲 This is what Appalachia means to me, so how does rewilding come in? I don’t really think Appalachia should be taken back to a truly unaltered state, as the definition of rewilding implies. Although that would bring back the buffalo and the elk, it would eliminate the people, which is really the point: Appalachia = people. What we can do, though, is rediscover the vintage principles Appalachia was built upon, and figure out how that best fits into our modern context. 🏔The rugged, self-reliant, into the wild mindset that inspired early American settlers to strike off from the coast into the unknown. 🏔The will and know-how to survive in a harsh environment- higher altitudes, absurd weather, steep terrain, abundant wildlife, and general unpredictability make for a challenging existence! 🏔Deep-rooted love for community and a slower, simpler way of life. 🌲 Some of these things are also American in nature, not just Appalachian- we shouldn’t forget that Appalachia is actually an American subculture- but there is something wonderfully unique and inspiring about that American nature, mixed with a fiery Scotch-Irish heritage, and set against a mountain backdrop and lifestyle that craft the world of Appalachia. It’s a world like no other. 🌲 See you in post 3! 🌲 #appalachianmountains #appalachianmountainclub #appalachiantrail #mountainfolk #mountainculture #appalachianculture #folkmusic #appalachianmusic #hiketheat #thruhike #greatsmokeymountains #danielboonenationalforest #rewild #appalachianartisans #mountainscape #mountainside

Grid Post: Part 3! This is the final post of a 3-part grid post mini-series. Check out the previous posts for Parts 1 and 2. 🌲 My desire is to seek out all the best qualities of Appalachia, both past and present, and figure out how we can marry the two for a sustainable future. I don’t want to be stuck in the past, but I do want to bring history and its many lessons along for the ride. That’s why you’ll see such a variety at Rewild Appalachia. 🏔How do we take the best ancient, time-tested lessons, and properly infuse them into the modern world? 🏔How does that effect our definition and pursuit of natural health? Of homesteading? Of city life, even? 🏔What skills and/or gear do we need to thrive in any environment? 🏔What adventures await on the AT and countless other mountain trails? 🏔Growing your own food. 🏔Cutting firewood. 🏔Sustainably managing the forest. 🏔Cultural centers, ideas, people, and businesses. 🏔Honoring the Creator of Appalachia- and the universe- throughout it all. 🌲 You’ll find it all here, but as the roots of the mountains themselves run deep to connect the whole region, from Alabama to Maine, so does the idea of Rewilding Appalachia run deep to connect each one of these topics. 🌲 I didn’t grow up in Appalachia proper, but just outside of it. My family vacationed in the Great Smokies every few years, and I always left with an awe that I could never quite articulate. Now that I call the slopes of the Blue Ridge home, the best way I can describe that feeling…what draws us all home to the mountains, and inspires a love for Appalachia, is the well-known quote from John Muir: “The mountains are calling…and I must go…” . . #appalachianmountains #appalachianmountainclub #appalachiantrail #mountainfolk #mountainculture #appalachianculture #folkmusic #appalachianmusic #hiketheat #thruhike #greatsmokeymountains #danielboonenationalforest #rewild #appalachianartisans #mountainscape #mountainside #mountaintop #moonshine #moonshiners #themountainsarecalling #andimustgo #johnmuir #awalkinthewoods #optoutside 🌲

Trust: it's a two way street. I'm diverging from my usual caption styles to comment on #trust (briefly, I promise!) because I find myself overwhelmed by what I have with TybTangs. Sometimes I follow them when I can't find the trail. Not blindly as I think some folks believe, they've proven I can trust them to get us back on track, often fasten than I can (while saving me some anxious emotions!). And for their part, they trust me enough to turn their backs on an intense dog if I call them. I've proven I'm not going to allow their momentary vulnerability to be taken advantage of. 'Paying' them for their cooperation helps too! I think the fact the Shauna and I have built the foundation for a trust-based relationship is why I'm obsessively overprotective towards her suitors. Disclaimer: trust hasn't stopped Ty from chasing deer or Tango from raiding the sink; of course we're a work in progress but I'm awful grateful for what we have 😈😆 #followthedog #alwaystraining #lostabovetreeline #oops #hikesafe #relationshipbuilding #mydogs #mine #andiamtheirs #winterhiking #cardigan #didntmakeit #gettingtothesummitisoptionalgettingdownismandatory #manningtrail #themountainswillalwaysbethere #firescrewmountain #appalachianmountainclub #getoutside #hikethewhites #weekdayhiking #winterwonderland #myraddog #niteize

GREAT VALLEY * * * The sunsets on the Great Valley. As I stood on the Blue Ridge looking towards the Allegheny Mountains on a warm Winters day north of Roanoke. My mind drifted to a past Summer years ago in late July at this very spot. I remembered watching the sun drop on the horizon, turning to look behind me and seeing a Black Bear of decent size about 20 feet behind me. He slowly moved down the mountain. Outside of his movements no other sounds existed. He paused immediately below me and I like to think we both enjoyed a nice sunset together. As I packed up, I heard him slowly move on. I remember this as one of my earliest and favorite bear encounters. ____________________________________________ @appalachianmountainclub @visitvbr @blueridgemoments @visitvirginia @city_of_roanoke #loveVA #BlueRidgeDay @blueridgeparkwaydaily @naturalvirginia @only.in.virgina #landscapesbynicholasmoore ____________________________________________ #ExploreVA #Blueridgeparkway #Blueridgemountains #sunset_vision #super_photosunsets #blueridgemoments #rsa_mountains #mountainstones #visitvirginia #mountainigers #loves_mountains_ #appalachiamountains #blueridgeoutdoors #bestmountainartists #loves_mountains_ #blueridgemountains #bns_mountains #gooutsideandplay #splendid_mountains #ipulledoverforthis #naturalvirginia #eastcoastcreatives #nikonnofilter #appalachianmountainclub #onlyinvirginia #mountainlife #igcolor

I mean, technically we ARE on a lake, and the sun IS shining ☀️ Today we all embraced some serious face-numbing, butt-chilling, eyelash-freezing, keep-moving-or-die kind of fun! I reviewed a similar version of this loop about 2 1/2 years ago, but it was from a summer trek, which is a little different from the frozen loop this past weekend. Starting up the Boulder Loop Trail, I enjoyed the smoother terrain of the snowy crust covering the usually rocky trail. Microspikes provided a solid grip on the few spots that were thick with ice. The toughest part of this loop was the short cliff-like ascent of Boulder Loop to the summit ridge of Mt. Major. From there it was stroll through soft snow-covered woods to Straightback, then a quick backtrack to pickup the Brook Trail for the descent, where once again the icy crust made for easier footing than in summer. As usual, it was great hike in the Belknaps to put in some miles and get the blood flowing. ⛰👍 . . . #hike #hikenh #visitnh #newhampshire #explore #exploremore #getoutside #optoutside #takeahike #nhoutdoors #newhampshireoutdoors #nhoutdoors #mountains #newhampshirelife #scenesofnh #scenesofnewengland #hikingadventures #hikingaddict #getoutdoors #granitestate #amcoutdoors #appalachianmountainclub #mountains #lakewinnipesaukee #lakesregion #igersnh #newenglandwinter #lakeview
