Pine cones are the seed bearings for our coniferous trees here in the Northeast. Pine cones will open and release its seeds in warm dry weather, while remain closed in cool damp weather. In this picture, you have a classic New England weather prediction.......”can’t make up its mind” 😉one minute warm, the next cool. 😆 #newengland #northeast #eastcoast #newhampshire #nh #gorham #pinkhamnotch #whitemountains #whitenountainsnh #wmnf #wmnfhikers #amcvolunteer #appalachianmountainclub #beoutdoors #forestecology #wildlifeecology #weather #nature #hiking #mountains #pinecone #pine #seeds #conifer #boreal #borealforest #balsam #spruce #getoutdoors #exploremore

Day 19 I lived through the aftermath of the prior day's rain. I tried and tried to stay clear of the river that was the trail, but an awful yet wonderful moment had me 4 inches deep in the mud. I was soaked, but from that point on, there would be no more dodging the inevitable. I embraced the trail and all of its wet muddyness. Rain is in the forecast for the entire next week, but at least today I got a break with some sunshine. Check back soon to see whether or not I've been swept away by a New England flood.

The majestic Franconia Ridge. Although heavily trafficked throughout the fair weather days of summer and fall, taking your time to really enjoy the journey up to its summits will give you a deeper respect for the range and its fragile alpine environment. John Muir once said, “The mountains are calling and I must go”, but maybe their ‘calling out’ to us is a much different meaning than WE think 🤔 #newhampshire #nh #whitemountains #whitemountainsnh #wmnf #wmnf_hikers #alpinestewards #amcvolunteer #apine #alpineflowers #newengland #northeast #eastcoast #franconianotch #franconiaridge #lonesomelake #hiking #mountains #lake #giveback #nature #getoutdoors #beoutdoors #appalachianmountainclub

Hiked up for the blooms. Stayed for this view. There weren't many rhododendron/azaleas in bloom on Thursday evening, but this scene made the trip worthwhile. I carried 20 pounds of camera gear to the top, but this shot is actually straight from my phone - just a few adjustments made to it. • • • #instagramtennessee #tristaradventures #homesweettn #nashvilleexplorersclub   #onlyintennessee #hiking #appalachiantrail #trektheat #takethetrail #backpacking #trail   #naturalnorthcarolina #visitnc #explorecarolina #northcarolina #ncoutdoor_inc #appalachianmountainclub #blueridge #blueridgemoments #ncmountains #NorthCarolinaOutdoors #onlyinnorrthcarolina #blueridgemountains #northcarolinamountains #booneview #gooutsideandplay #appalachian_explorers #teampixel

When I hiked my first 4,000’ peak, I hadn’t heard of the 46ers. When I decided I would try to become one, I couldn’t tell you much about the New Hampshire 48. When I finished New Hampshire, I set my sights on Vermont, the Catskills and ultimately Maine. It’s been quite a journey, involving blood, sweat, tears and even broken bones. But it also taught me discipline, helped me to find courage, strengthened my character and brought me to see the outdoors for the treasure that it is. While the logical next step is a winter round, I have been inspired to look beyond the peaks of the Northeast, and to explore as many places as possible, no matter how remote they seem. #amc4000 #newhampshire48 #adk46 #adirondacks #adkoe #hikethewhites #northeast111 #ne67 #hikevermont #catskillsmountains #appalachianmountainclub

Seems like several people are thru-hiking Nobo on the Appalachian Trail this year. Not only did I meet a bunch up in New Hampshire, but I met a few here in Massachusetts as I headed South on the AT up to Mount Greylock. If there are any hikers out there doing the AT this year, I’d love to here your stories! 💜 #berkshires #hiketheberkshires #appalachiantrail #appalachianmountainclub #massachusetts #ma #newengland #northeast #eastcoast #hiking #mountains #womenwhohike #thruhikers #athikers #maine #georgia #mountgreylock #nature #getoutdoors #beoutdoors

Take time and enjoy the little things. If you’re always caught up with the big picture you might end up stepping over the small and yet so beautiful parts of life. When hiking, please stay on trails and never step on green terrain. Be mindful of the vegetation around you, especially in the alpine zone where life takes a bit longer to come alive. Together we can preserve nature and continue to enjoy it as a place for meditation and serenity. #god #godscreation #nature #iheartnature #onlyinconnecticut #iheartconnecticut #newengland #beautiful #neverwalkone #neveralone #appalachiantrail #appalachianmountainclub #at2019 #whitemountains #hiking #alpinezone #alpineawareness #naturepreserve #mountlibertynh #mountlafayette #amchuts #whitemountainsnationalforest #bridalpathtrail #libertyspringstrail

A few more shots from the flight with @lighthawk_east and @me_at_landtrust to get documentary photos of conservation lands. It’s amazing how small the state becomes from up high. This past Monday, I found out that I passed my boards and I am officially Danielle Tourigny, PA-C! I will be starting next month working in Emergency Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. It is pretty surreal to think that this dream of many years has finally come true. To celebrate, I completed a 22.6 mile hike in the White Mountains yesterday with 5000 feet of elevation gain and three summits! This photo was one of my favorite views from yesterday. Suffice it to say, after all these accomplishments this week I’m feeling like a badass, and I hope I get to keep that feeling for the rest of my life because the next chapter is finally beginning! #appalachianmountainclub #igersnh #ig_newengland #appalachiantrail #wmnfhikers #newhampshire #newengland #hikethewhites #optoutside

At the beginning of June, I love how the leaves out here are still young and even developing in higher elevations. Everything around me had more of a sense of Spring than Summer. Living just a bit south of here, my Spring went by so fast, and I didn’t get much of a chance to enjoy the Spring flowers that came with it. I was able to thoroughly enjoy another dose of Spring here in Pinkham Notch......although it comes with black flies and a heavy dose of pollen, I’ll take it! 😉🌸🏔🥰 #whitemountains #whitemountainsnh #mountwashington #mtwashington #newhampshire #nh #newengland #northeast #eastcoast #pinkhamnotch #crystalcascade #wildcatrange #spring #flora #hiking #mountains #amcvolunteer #appalachianmountainclub #beoutdoors #nature #womenwhohike #getoutdoors

- Serendipity - I just happened to be crossing this Nancy Brook when the sun was illuminating the new growth on the trees while still skimming off the cascades of the brook. 10 min before and 10 min after the light would be more uneven - parts of the brook would be in shadow, the leaves unevenly lit, and some rocks excessively bright from glare on the wet surfaces. I lucked out. While the falls were more physically impressive, the lighting was just about perfect for this this section. . . Day 9 I entered Massachussetts and it immediately kicked my ass. 3 summits in an 8 mile span, starting with Bear Mountain. A small, but steep climb with a rock observation tower and lots of pretty pink flowers on the way down. Then, Mt. Race, with views for days. And finally, Mt. Everett.

Day 8 I met a guy named "two tents" and his dog Ben. I saw a giant's thumb, then found myself on another road. I gorged myself on hot deli food and got some snacks for later. I read Ben Franklin's autobiography in a library while waiting for a package. A very nice lady came up to me to complain about Sarah Palin and show me some DVDs that she liked. I climbed up to Lion's Head and contemplated bear attacks some more.

Day 7 I chased waterfalls and crossed bridges. I walked through meadows and summited a small mountain. I met people replacing some foot bridges on the trail and almost got hit by a train. I got to camp too early and finally did some stretching. Turns out that's good for you... I think I'll do it more often.

Day 6 I had a breakfast burrito in Cornwall Bridge and crossed this stream. I contemplated bear attacks and sang to myself when I could. I finished my hike early so I went on to the next campground, passing through a couple dirt roads and a giant boulder crack.

Day 4 we ascended Caleb's Peak, descended St John's Ledges, and then had a breezy walk in the park for the next few miles to our next campsite. We saw 8 dogs, several chipmunks and squirrels, a couple frogs, a million bugs, and one big black snake.

Day 3, we got lost. Then we got un-lost. We walked up some more hills, set up camp, ditched our stuff, and headed into town for a resupply because we're dummies who dont know how to ration. Connecticut looks exactly how I would've imagined. It was like stepping into a story book. Our minds wandered at what kind of creepy shit lurks beneath the surface of an uncomfortably perfect looking little east coast town. Cults? Probably cults.

Day 2, we walked a rough 10 miles through constant uphills, then downhills, then uphills, then downhills, then rocky unforgiving uphills, and rocky unforgiving downhills. But the view of Indian Rock made it all worth it. We were faced with a few mishaps: our water filter started leaking, Steven's pack ripped which we promptly fixed with a sewing needle, floss, and duct tape, and by the time we reached camp, we couldn't feel our legs. And yet, we went to sleep absolutely mystified, and incredibly happy to be on this journey.

Day 1, we walked through some beautiful farmlands. Not even 5 minutes in, we found the work of a trail angel: a tote filled with 6 gallons of fresh water, a journal logged with entries from other hikers, and a trash bag. It was beautiful all day, but rained all night. I wonder if I'll ever get the mud off this tent...

As we came upon the start of the Appalachian Trail, I asked Steven if he would take a picture of me next to an AT sign. To which he obliged. Cut to a few days later when I look at said picture and realize, he missed the sign entirely. So anyway, here's a picture of me next to some weird pole.
