Showing some ❤️ for my home state tonight! Big Brutus, the electric shovel that dug all the strip pits that I fish out of back in the 60s & 70s. It stands a whopping 160 feet tall and weighs 11 million pounds. The boom alone is 150 feet long. No, I have never been to the top of it. In it's day, this giant ran 24 hours a day for 11 years. It was used to remove soil and rocks from the coal seams during the mining days. Pretty cool piece of history right here in my big backyard. • • • • • #onlyinkansas #onlyinks #kansas #igks #igkansas #ks #ksonly #justkansasthings #noplacelikeks #noplacelikekansas #kansasphoto #kansasphotos #kansasphotographer #kansasphotography #ksphotos #ksphotographer #ksphotography #sunflowerstate #lovekansas #kansaslove #thekansascollective #flyoverstate #thesunflowerstate #thewheatstate #bigbrutus #sek #sekadventures #route66 #historicroute66

It's five o'clock somewhere! Specifically here. It's five o'clock here, okay? So now is a great time to stop into @zmtwistedvines for a glass of their Gladiator wine. And starting this weekend, while you're there you can also pick up a Gladiator Spa Bar made with repurposed Gladiator wine ingredients, pink Himalayan salt, peppermint, and lavender fragrance. Then you can enjoy Gladiator wine any time of day without stupid society judging you.

Spent part of my last day as a 36 year old organizing pictures. It reminded me I’ve had a great summer and I need to keep focusing on everything I have instead of what I’m lacking 💰 Because frankly, I’m lucky. Really lucky (yeah, I know, I’ve posted that about a million times). And I’m very much loved to have been supported like I have been these past nine months. So thank you for being there, listening, inviting me out on adventures, making me laugh, asking how I’m doing, filling my belly, helping me grow, and giving me advice (or a kick in the ass- whichever was more necessary) 😉 Was this past year ideal? Not really 🤣 But also, yes. This rollercoaster stretched me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I gained insight. Started enforcing boundaries. Focused on how to better take care of myself so I can take better care of the people I love 💛 I have a deeper, grounded appreciation for a lot of things. And for a lot of people 🙂 37 comes tomorrow- I’m ready to stretch in new ways. To be challenged. To see more of the world. To create/bring together my own little community where we can all be safe and supported. And to keep evolving into a better version of myself 😊 Thank you for another year with my son, friends, and family. For another year to explore this vast world we all live in. And thank you for the love, laughter, and joy I found when I was stumbling in the dark 💛 #ruralkansas #greenwoodcountykansas #lifeinkansas #smalltownkansas #kansas #greatplains #midwest #adventuresfromthegreatplains #noplacelikeks #amateurphotography #amateurphotographer #kansasphotography #kansasphotographer #iphonephotography #wheelsforfeet #havecarwilltravel #allineedisatankofgas #exploreyourstate #daytripenthusiast

🌻🌻 #kansaslivingmag . . Finally got around to getting some sunflower pictures! Sunflowers and August, can’t have one without the other in Kansas. 🌻 Had to take these shots off the road as the field isn’t open to the public. Wish I could have gotten some better angles but I still like how they turned out. . . . . #ksoutdoors #kansasphotos #kansasmag #noplacelikeks #ksbucketlist #onlyinkansas #midwesttoday #rural_love #rsa_rural_ #midwestmoment #igkansas #flyoverstates #kansasphotographer #renegade_rural #country_features #kansaslivingmag #sky #sunset #kssunset #sky_captures #sky_perfection #landscape_captures #landscape #landscapephotography #ultimate_landscapes #sunflowers #sunflowerfield ( #📷 @jessijacobsphoto )

Take a stroll in the prairie this week and have kids look for grass that looks like a bird foot on top. They'll probably discover the big bluestem, which has three bird-toe-like parts to the top of the grass. Big bluestem, an integral part of tallgrass prairie ecosystems, is also called "turkey foot" because of the three-part top. What you see is only a small part of the plant. This grass can have roots up to 12 feet deep! The Discovery Center maintains a native prairie grass and wildflower habitat in front of and to the south of our museum with paths for exploring this unique ecosystem. We invite you to walk through the prairie, view the natural habitat of many native animals and birds, enjoy the butterflies, and see how many different wildflowers you can see. The prairie is open to visitors to explore, and since it's outside the museum grounds, admission is not required. #topcitykids #kcdcseriousfun #tallgrassprairie #noplacelikeks

There, we've planned your morning for you, so get out of bed (no judgment, but come on, time to get the day started), and check out our parent company at their storefront at 620 Cherokee, right across the street from the farmers market!

Did you watch the #sunset last night? Did you watch the #lightning last night? Did you watch a big tree limb fall outside your bedroom window last night? I did! It was kind of funny how it all worked out. I went on a 20 mile long bike ride and I was completely exhausted when I got home except the sunset was gorgeous that I immediately hopped in the car to drive out to the country and capture these sunset photos. Then I spent time with my wife. Last thing before bed I needed to go put the cars in before the impending storm which meant I actually had to clean the driveway to be able to put a car in the garage and another under the covered driveway. While I was moving cars my truck happened to be running and pointing down the driveway. That seemed to correspond nicely to my desire to go watch the lightning that I had noticed to the north and so I did. I drove a couple miles north into the country and really enjoyed watching the spectacular lightning storm. There was no sound as the storm was probably at least 30 miles away. Then I went back home and went to bed. I’m not sure if I fell asleep or not before a major gust front came through and startled me with its ferocity. (after all I was a roofer on this house and the builder of my covered driveway so I will know who built it) The wind was blowing like crazy and it wound up knocking a large tree branch against the side of the house so I opened the shade to look out just in time to watch the wind blow the branch/tree out away from the house and down to the ground, thankfully without hurting the gutter or the shingles on its way down. I guess you could say it was a pretty exciting evening!

I had such a wonderful meeting with Dr. Tompkins, the interim Wichita State University President, about big opportunities we have ahead of us. I loved learning more about the diversity of the students and faculty, the amount of renowned sculpture art on campus, and their overall mission to foster a welcoming space for students and community, alike.

Check out what's fresh in the prairie this week...cup plants! Cup plants have the amazing feature of sturdy leaves that form a small cup along the stem to hold water. The water attracts birds and insects that help pollinate the plant. They also have square stems! You can spot the unique stem shape very well on the plants we've pruned in the prairie.
